Welcome to your Beginner Stache!

0-3 Months

Baby is meeting the world for the first time, and they are the absolute center of it. If they are joined by first time parents, the amount of learning for everyone can feel overwhelming. Routines are still forming so patience, helping hands and kindness can go a long way.

Baby Basics

Sleep

Babies sleep a lot. 15-16 hours, with 2-3 naps. Sounds dreamy, right?

Safe Sleep ABCs – babies should sleep Alone, on their Backs and in a Crib (or bassinet)

Holding Baby

Holding newborns can be intimidating, but it’s one of the sweetest experiences! Because they are still building neck strength, the most important thing to remember is to support their neck when picking up, setting down or holding. Most are able to support their own heads by 4 months.

One of the easiest tricks is to hold them like a football; on their back along your forearms with their head nestled in the crook of one of your arms.

Feeding

Babies give clues they are hungry. Watch for lip smacking, tongue movement or hands in mouth as signs baby may be hungry. Every baby is different, but here are typical feeding patterns for this age:

  • 0-1 Months: 2-3 oz every 2-3 hours
  • 2-3 Months: 3-5 oz every 2-4 hours
Diapers
  • Wet 5-6 daily; Dirty 2-3 daily
  • For girls, wipe front to back
  • For boys, remember to point the penis facing down in diaper so it doesn’t leak out of the top. You might also want to cover it while you’re cleaning so you don’t get sprayed!
